I’m not sure there could have been a better place to conclude the night at. After waiting an obnoxious amount of time for a drink we took our spots at the front corner of the bar. It was only a few minutes before an intoxicated man started talking to me. Franco from West Bloomfield. His 2^nd time hanging out in Detroit; the first was on his 21^st birthday years ago. I saw his friend, Russ, approach Roz and strike up a conversation; Franco continued to ramble on about things I couldn’t hear very well, and then insisted that I dance with him. At that point… I wasn’t near drunk enough. After pulling on myself and Roz for a minute his friends approached and whisked him off into the street. Russ ran back in to give Roz a hug while groping and picking her up by her ass. Later leading to ‘I want you baby’. One quick run to the bathroom before leaving revealed the foosball table and other enjoyable items towards to the back. Overall, a place I would return to for a good time and possibly meet some interesting characters.

There was a DJ and space to dance right inside the door. We went up to the bar and got our drinks, vodka cranberry $5. We took a seat on the corner of the bar and started people watching. We were pretty content at this point of the night (close to 2) in just talking amongst ourselves. A young man took a seat next to Sasha and started talking to her. He tried saying a thing or two to me but it was too loud to hear and then his friend took a seat next to me. It was even pretty difficult to hear him so he kept putting his face real close to mine. I didn’t really mind but could tell he was more drunk than me. After a good few minutes of talking a third friend showed up and they had to leave, so he convinced me to exchange numbers. They left and we finished our drinks as the bar closed and I did some light dancing. As we were stepping out to the sidewalk I got some texts, calling me Baby. :/

The Baltimore

It was a quick walk down Broadway towards Greektown to get to The Well, which is where we intended on going until we came across The Baltimore right next door. I looked at Roz and asked her which one we should go in, she excitedly says “Both!” Inside there were large wooden booths with the bar and stools on the right. We headed straight to the worst makeshift bathroom I have ever encountered that contained a couple of extremely tan girls in what were terrible colors for them. This should have been a big giveaway as to what the crowd was like. We took a peek into what seemed to be an entirely different bar in the back and immediately decided it wasn’t the place we wanted to be. We grabbed our drinks and hung out towards the front of the bar which seemed to be littered with photos of friends and groups just hanging out. After admiring some attractive people and nice clothes we hopped on over to The Well.

The Baltimore

We moved on south, towards The Well and on the way (right next to it) we discovered The Baltimore and being the adventurous people we are, we went in. We passed the bar and made our way down a hallway stacked with boxes of empty bottles to get to the doorless bathroom. The sink was crooked, the stall doors were household bedroom doors and there was writing covering them. There’s a second bar in a real small room at the end of the hall, so we stepped over there but didn’t stay long. Kind of trashy in people and floor; I think I used the term Jersey Shore-ish to describe that bar. So we went back to the front and had one drink there. Vodka cranberry again, $7. I thought that was a bit much but it was ok sized. The bartenders were cute and the crowd wasn’t bad (in the front that is.) Still, The Baltimore wasn’t holding our attention or proving to be a great place to meet people, so I say I may go back, but probably not.

Cheli's Chili Bar

We stood outside of Cheli’s and watched some live music in a real large outdoor space with big log style picnic tables. Cheli’s is another place that I’d return to for the food and beer selection, but we didn’t stay long enough Friday to sit at the bar. For what we were looking for on a BE:DET night it was too Tigers, too old, and too calm.

Next on the list was Cheli’s Chili Bar. I haven’t heard much about this place but constantly drive past it when I’m downtown and have always been curious. Outside, in what is normally their parking lot, a band was playing surrounded by picnic tables and umbrellas with less than ten people enjoying the show. Based on the crowd and lack thereof that we could see inside we decided to just poke our heads in. With a large selection of beers on tap and a good number of tables this would be a good place to come back and try out their food, but for a night crawling bars it wasn’t the place to be.

On our way to Rub BBQ & Pub we watched a real drunk girl try to make her way to a party bus. Don’t think she stepped correctly on her right foot once, I’m glad she didn’t break an ankle in the heals. She was being helped by a guy with bright blue shorts that were too tight and a shirt that was too big. He was the Christian Mulligan of the night (there have been ones on other nights, in other bars) [A Christian Mulligan: Just came off the yacht with boat shoes and bermuda shorts, a tall skinny guy with a dress sense that’s almost there.] Then we talked to a guy and explained what we were doing and he suggested D’Mongos, which I’ve been to so it wasn’t allowed that night, and Bagley St Bar. Which we will go to in the future but put it on the list for now.
Inside Rub Pub was again mostly Tigers fans but a little younger and cuter than at State Bar. We had coupons good for $1 drafts so Sasha fronted for me since I didn’t have cash. It was bud light despite them having a long wall of beers on tap. I would absolutely go back there, but probably more for food and to try new beers, not for the crowd. And I’d go with beer & food loving bros. There was also a few coolers filled with bottled beer. One caught our eye and we had to ask, “Is that a white beer, or a white bottle?” I was disappointed to learn it was just the bottle. I absolutely would have had to try tasting a white milky looking beer. We didn’t talk to anyone inside this bar, and moved on across Woodward to Cheli’s Bar.

Rub BBQ & Pub

As we approached Rub BBQ & Pub two employees offered some $1 beer discount cards. I imagine they often hand these out after the game to entice people in. Only moments after teasing them about entering the bar, around the corner came a big group of partiers out of Dirty Trick. One of which was an extremely unbalanced drunk girl in heels… making a fool of herself and almost tackling Roz and I off the sidewalk while avoiding the help of a man. We eventually made it inside to a very classic Restaurant/Bar layout. After getting our single dollar beers we just relaxed and checked out the crowd. After noticing a very attractive younger man (then most of the other Tigers fans present) at the end of the bar we saw the plethora of beers they had on tap. That alone would make me come back plus the idea of some good barbecue. Definitely a good joint to grab food and a beer at.

The Dirty Trick

While making the transition to The Dirty Trick, a block away, Roz and I encountered Jerome and Nate. A pair of gentlemen that attended the game who had made Dirty Trick their after party. This place couldn’t have been more different from State Bar; a plethora of tattoos amongst a young, hip crowd. Drinks were ever-so kindly supplied by Jerome, who was quite lost throughout our entire conversation and turned out to actually be named Tom. Shortly after he was spilling his guts about opera we decided it was time to move onto the next one, but not after a quick peek at the Marilyn Monroe, Elvis etc. memorabilia art hanging on the wall beside the pool table.

The Dirty Trick

Just before going in we met two guys that were on a smoke break from The Dirty Trick. Sasha and I can’t agree on what they said their names were and on top of that the one we talked to while in The Dirty Trick gave us two names. So in my book he is Jerome/Tom/Jeremy. JTJ had on thick large black frames, like really large, really thick, wannabe hipster (and the rest of his outfit wasn’t very hipster.) He bought us drinks- therefore we’re not sure how much they were there- so we stood there talking to JTJ for a while and quickly realized how drunk he was. He spilled his almost full glass of Leinenkugel Summer Shandy and kept pushing up his giant glasses that seemed to almost be embedded into his face at this point. He got on the topic of opera and Shakespeare and he leaning in close to recite things in my ear. But he was slurring his words and it was loud to I told him it wasn’t the time or place. He got upset and sulked, actually sulked. I hinted at Sasha that my drink was nearing its end and we politely thanked him for the drinks and tried to say goodbye. He didn’t ask for my number but made me take his.

The Dirty Trick was pretty packed and the crowd was much different than State Bar, I noticed a lot of tattoos and piercings and a stage for live music. The art and music were pretty good and would definately go back. Side note: texted JTJ the following day and he admitted he had been pretty damn trashed and didn’t remember me. We at least got free drinks and found a new bar to drink at.
